The Pennine Lancashire Food Festival 2006 was a huge success. To find out what went on last year, please read on.

Thursday 7th September -
 
An Evening of Fine Lancashire Food, Othello’s Restaurant, £27.50
Located in the beautiful Victorian setting of Astley Bank Hotel, Othello’s Head Chef James Andrew compiled a sumptuous four-course menu featuring a modern twist on classic Lancashire fare. Prepared with the finest, freshest local produce James and his team excel in a county famous for good food and drink.

Thwaites’ Brewery Tour and Buffet Supper, £12.50
This sell-out event was a unique insight into the truly fascinating world of one of the country’s oldest family owned breweries, and included a tour of the company museum, brewery and canning plant, samples, plus 2 free drinks in the Thwaites’ visitor centre and a Lancashire buffet supper.

Supper with Margo, Rhubarb Café and Bistro, £7
Blackburn’s First Lady Margo Grimshaw hosted a sell-out evening of chat and laughter about her colourful and adventurous life. A traditional and tasty Lancashire supper completed a fascinating evening in the company of our most vivacious and vibrant entrepreneur – a true lady who has never forgotten her roots.

An Evening with the King
Another sell-out event, this evening began with a torchlight reception and mulled wine in the courtyard, followed by a sumptuous six course Tudor banquet of finest Lancashire fare: feasting, drinking, dancing and music - a lively medley of entertainment climaxing in the knighting of the Sirloin in the Great Hall.

Festival Gala Dinner with Paul Rankin, The Whitehall Hotel, £40
Paul Rankin
Paul Rankin was guest of honour and after dinner speaker at the sold out Pennine Lancashire Gala dinner at the Whitehall Hotel and spilt the beans on life as a super-chef as well as providing some humorous and highly incisive food for thought on the world of good food and drink.

The dinner was a celebration of great food – especially Lancashire food – and the five-course gourmet menu was a fantastic testament to our local producers, farmers and growers, who provided all the ingredients for this very special evening.

The World’s Biggest Custard Pie Fight, Darwen Town Centre, FREE
The opening of the Pennine Lancashire Food Festival 2006 was a world record attempt for the most custard pies thrown in three minutes, and set off the weekend with a bang – or should that be a splat!

Festival Food Market and Family Fun Fair, Darwen Town Centre, FREE
Darwen Town Centre was home to the biggest and best food and drink market for many a mile. The market took place in Darwen town centre on Friday and Saturday before moving on to the village of Edgworth for the third and final day on Sunday. Lancashire’s finest food and drink offerings were available to sample, test, taste and buy.

Superfood Schools Event, Darwen Library Theatre, £2
Young Chefs
Dynamic duo Philippa James and Rob Alcock hosted the schools event, which included demonstrations for super ‘smoothies’, packed with flavour, fibre, and vitamins and scrummy scones, topped with real ‘Lanky’ cheese, and made quicker than a microwave snack This event was open to schools, colleges and young people’s organisations across Lancashire.

Lancashire’s Heroes and Villains Tour with Simon Entwistle, Turton Tower, £16
Simon Entwistle
Local celebrity and presenter of ITV’s ‘Into the Unknown’, Simon Entwistle, hosted this enthralling sojourn into mystery where the audience heard all about Lancashire’s most haunted and horrid history. This sell-out event included a spiced fruit punch welcome and a Lancashire Hot Pot supper.

Pendle Witch Wayfarer, Darwen Bus Station/Nelson Bus Station, £7.50
A cask ale trail by bus, people were able to hop on and off to sample the traditional and mystical Pendleside Inns and eating establishments. Brimming with homely hospitality, these famous rural hostelries provide the ideal atmosphere for imbibing in the unique flavours of our finest cask ales.

Saturday 9th September -
 
Festival Food Market, Darwen Town Centre, FREE
The Bridge
Second day of the Festival Market and family entertainment. At 4pm, the first Lancashire Waiter’s Dash championship took place. The action transferred to Bridge Street as the festival market made way for this fun and frenzied spectacle where Lancashire’s finest and fittest waiters competed for the title of Lancashire’s Fastest Waiter.

 

 

 

Theatre of Food and Dreams! Masterchefs at Darwen Library Theatre, £3.50
A posse of the region’s finest chefs hit the stage in a spectacular demonstration of great cooking, fab food and loads of fun! A sizzling programme was put together to entertain and inspire the whole family – putting the glorious back in food! A single ticket provided entry for the full day, enabling the audience to explore other Festival events between performances. Events included:
• Get set cook! – Wacky cooking competition with a variety of local chefs
• Surprising – totally! – Black pudding makers RS Ireland demonstrated Black Pudding Ice Cream
• Gourmet Grub to go – Philippa James and Rob Alcock demonstrated how easy it is to source great local produce, cook amazing fresh food (without the help of the microwave) and do it all on a budget!
• Fab Food for Families – Philippa James demonstrated fresh, healthy food for families.

Witton Weaver’s Way Gourmet Walks, Strawbury Duck, £15
West Pennine Woodlands and Wayoh Reservoir 3.5 miles. The walk started and finished at the Strawbury Duck Inn, Overshores Road, Entwistle and was hosted by our jolly walking guide Bronwen Earnshaw. The walk ended in the village of Entwistle; where rambling turned to rumbling tums and a fabulous two-course supper awaited at the Strawbury Duck Inn.

Sunday 10th September -
 
Mushroom Hunt and Brunch, Sunnyhurst Woods, £10
An early morning edible fungus hunt was enjoyed in the summer setting of Darwen’s Sunnyhurst Woods. Guided by BTCV ranger Nick Martin, this sell-out hunt was followed by a Lancashire brunch at the Old England Kiosk set in the centre of the woods.

Festival Food Market, Barlow Institute, Edgworth, FREE
The Festival Market transferred from Darwen and moved out into the West Pennine Moors to Edgworth Village. Set in the centre of the village and bordered by Edgworth Cricket Club and the local bowling club, the building and its surrounding grounds provided a picturesque location for day 3 of the Festival Market. The finest ‘Made in Lancashire’ fare was available to sample and there was a chance to meet the people who grow, rear, produce and sell Lancashire’s finest foods.

Natural and Organic World, Barlow Institute, FREE
A Natural and Organic Festival at the Barlow Institute was enjoyed, where people could sample healthy produce – with organic food and drink from local regional and national specialists – plus natural solutions and chemical free cosmetics. An organic and vegetarian café was open throughout.

Victorian Afternoon Tea, Turton Tower, £4.75
When the Kay family moved into Turton Tower in 1845, afternoon tea was gaining in popularity. This afternoon allowed people to enjoy a locally produced classic Victorian high-tea of finger sandwiches, cakes and scones in our cosy tearoom.

Herbal Lotions and Potions, Turton Tower
Lel Hoyle was on hand for people to learn about herbs and how they were used in Tudor times. Activities included making lotions or potions to cure all your ills for people to take away with them for a small cost.

A Cookin’ Cricket Match, Edgworth Cricket Club, FREE/£4.50 with afternoon tea
Lancashire’s top amateur and professional cricketers took to the field alongside celebrated chefs of the Red Rose County. Legendary Lancashire and England wicket-keeper Warren Hegg, led out a team of celebrated cricketing and cooking friends for an afternoon of fun in the sun! Visitors were able to sample a typical West Pennine Afternoon Tea, which featured goodies made and provided by local bakers, confectioners, bee keepers and tea/coffee merchants.

Tea for Two with King Henry VIII, Samlesbury Hall, £6
A home-made afternoon tea in the best English tradition featuring guest of honour King Henry VIII. His Majesty led a humorous guided tour, which was followed by home made cakes, scones, sandwiches (with Lancashire fillings) and tea in the best traditional style.

The Chocolate House
The Chocolate House was visited to see how entirely hand made chocolates are really made – and sample them too! The Chocolate House Tour welcomes everyone to a fascinating insight into a rare craft.

 

 


Witton Weavers’ Way Gourmet Walk, Whitehall Hotel, £15
Darwen Tower - 4 miles. Started and finished at the Whitehall Hotel, Darwen.
Historic lanes and moorland tracks were discovered, leading up to the famous Jubilee Tower. Once up the tower superb panoramic views were enjoyed across Lancashire to the coast and the Lake District. A hearty Lancashire supper was served at 7pm back at the Whitehall Hotel.

Henry’s Hog Roast & Medieval Fayre, Samlesbury Hall, £25
Medieval Wild Boar & Fowl Feast at Samlesbury Hall Featuring Medieval entertainment and an amazing 16th century comedy show with King Henry VIII and his Tudor players. The hall and grounds were opened up to host a private party where fine Lancashire food and drink was conjured into an authentic medieval feast. Wild boar and capon were stuffed with local apples and herbs, spit roasted for 6 hours over a selection of fragrant woods and served with a platter of local breads and sweetmeats. A huge Lancashire cheese board completed the feast whilst kings and jesters provided the fun. Complimentary tot of home-made mead and tour of the Hall was included.

Haunted Inn Gourmet Ghostwalk, Chetham Arms, £14
Plus Victorian supper at the Chetham Arms. Dressed in authentic Victorian costume, ghost-host and star of ITV’s ‘Into the Unknown’, Simon Entwistle guided guests on a spine-chilling journey through Lancashire’s spooky past. Guests met at the Chetham Arms, built in 1712 and supposedly haunted by at least 4 spirits – and not of the alcoholic kind! A Victorian supper parlour was recreated and a splendid authentic supper was served up from the farmers, growers and producers of the surrounding villages for this sell-out event.

Parsi Royal Banquet Buffet and Cooking Demonstration: A Taste of Persia, Turton Tower, £18.00
Bini’s Darwen Coffee House is proud to be the first Parsi establishment in the North West (indeed north of London) and boasts authentic, home-cooked recipes developed by a Parsi chef of 35 years experience. With a strong accent on herbs and spices; Turton’s Elizabethan heritage combines beautifully with Parsi cuisine. The evening included a cooking demonstration by master-chef Maneck, a talk on the history of Parsi cuisine and the Parsi Royal Banquet Buffet experience. A spice trail was also available to discover the exotic taste of Lancashire at Turton Tower in the heart of the West Pennine Moors.
